Autumn and Half Term

Holidays for the Tribe at Half Term

Are you looking for a place to stay which is big enough for you and your family, your greatest friends and their tribe?

Hotels are just not the same as a house and who wants to stay in a Summer villa in the Autumn? We can offer a real treat for you all to go away together to a truly magical place - a castle big enough for everyone.

Palazzo Portole is the perfect destination - a castle made for families. The owner always intended it to be that way. It is easily large enough to accommodate two families and has some unique features, such as the Tower with its Roof Terrace, the outdoor dining room and barbecue and the private walled garden. There are wood fires in the kitchen and sitting room and central heating for those cooler Autumn evenings. The Palazzo is perfectly situated as a base from which to explore the local area as well as for trips to Italy and Slovenia.

Oprtalj, a medieval hilltop town in the alpine region of Istria is a hidden gem. The middle of the old town is a maze of cobbled alleys, vaulted arches and hidden courtyards. The only inhabitants of some of the buildings are owls and the lanes inside the town walls are traffic-free. It is a paradise for children of all ages who can run around in the certainty that they won’t see a single car. The main photo on the municipality’s website - - shows a view of the town. The long building with red shutters behind the church is the Palazzo.

October in Istria is a very special time for gourmets - it is the height of the white truffle season. The region is justly famous for this delicacy which is abundant in the forests around Oprtalj. The season is short - barely three months long - and in Livade in the valley 6km below Oprtalj there is a festival every weekend in October where truffles can be sampled and bought and other autumnal fruits of the forest - wild mushrooms, sweet chestnuts, black truffles - can be found. Some unusual outings could include visits to the limestone cave systems at Baredine in Istria - - or in Slovenia at Postojna - You can also visit the stud farm at Lipica in Slovenia where the famous white Lipizzaner horses of the Vienna Riding School are bred. Venice is just under three hours away and less than an hour’s drive across the border in Slovenia is Piran, a perfectly-preserved city on a promontory in the Gulf of Venice whose piratical inhabitants dominated the sea route from the Adriatic to Venice -
