Ryanair flies from Stansted twice weekly.

TUI (previously Thomson) flies from Gatwick to Pula.

Easyjet flies from London Southend twice weekly.

British Airways flies twice weekly from Heathrow.

Please check their websites.

Trieste Ronchi (Italy) is 90km (55m)

Ryanair flights year-round several days a week from Stansted.

Ljubljana (Slovenia) is 123km (76m)

Easyjet flights year-round several days a week from Stansted.

Venice Marco Polo (Italy) is 200km (124m)

Regular year-round flights.

Rijeka is 95km (59m)

Some flights during the season.

DRIVING and TRAFFIC CONTOLS

If you are hiring a car in Italy please check that it has a vignetta before you set out. This is a sticker affixed to the windscreen which covers the cost of driving on Slovenian motorways. You can buy one in Italy for €15, which is valid for a week, before the short journey on the Slovenian motorway into Croatia. The fine for not having one is €300-€800. See below, in the directions for driving from Trieste, for the route avoiding the Slovenian toll road.

Once you are in Istria, please note the following when driving:

Traffic police are entitled to stop you at random to check documents. They may also ask to see the contents of your boot and may fine you if you do not have the above-mentioned safety equipment.

It is said that the local police are given quotas each day for the numbers of checks and fines they should make. This would go some way to explaining the frequency of checks.  They also stop non-local cars more frequently than Istrian-plated vehicles and are liaible to set higher fines for outsiders so PLEASE BEWARE!

DIRECTIONS FROM AIRPORTS

FROM TRIESTE:

On leaving the airport follow the green signs for Autostrada (not the blue one for Trieste). There is a toll just after the airport where you take ticket (it will cost 1.30€ at the next booth about 12 km away). After you take the ticket bear right taking the motorway towards Trieste, which you will bypass.

Continue, following signs for Slovenia/Capo d'Istria (aka Koper).

Take turning to Muggia/Capo d'Istria (Koper).

Bypass Muggia continuing to Capo d'Istria. Follow signs to Pula (Pola).

PLEASE NOTE: Just after Muggia you cross the old Italian/Slovene border after which you will travel 8km on a motorway to Capo d'Istria (Koper) for which you will need to buy a vignetta costing €15 for a week. This can be bought at the OMV petrol station, in to the right, just after the old border buildings.

For the route avoiding the motorway and the vignetta go to www.liveistria.com/?p=621 which has excellent instructions in English. Please note that the beginning of the route involves driving into the OMV petrol station and you need to keep left of the pumps turning right at the end of the forecourt, round the back of the petrol station's shop. Then turn left at the T-junction immediately. This route will take you to Capo d'Istria (Koper).

Once through Capo d'Istria continue towards Pula

Cross the Slovene/Croatian border following the road up the hill through the decommissioned Croatian border post.

Take the first left turn - to Kastel (Castelvenere) & Buje.

At the end of Kastel take the small turning to the left signposted Kremenje/Momjan. (There is a lay-by on the right just before the turning called 'Bikers Friendly Point' and on the corner of the turning there's a white tower.)

Follow the road until you reach Kremenje. With the restaurant called Pjero in front of you turn left towards Oprtalj and Livade. After about 15 km, having passed through Marusici and Sterna, you will arrive in Oprtalj.

You pass a small chapel on the right and the graveyard on the left. Just after that, turn sharp left uphill (there's an old wall on the right of the small lane). At the top of the hill pass through the narrow gap (wide enough for a Land Rover) between the orange house on the right and the ruin on the left. The Palazzo is on the left.

Park against the high wall on the right, leaving space for other vehicles to pass. If you have a wide car it may be safer to park it on the square near the church. You can get there by turning right between the orange house and the high wall. It is a very short walk back to the Palazzo.

There is additional parking at the Buje end of Oprtalj opposite the graveyard and at the Livade end of Oprtalj, opposite the large cream-coloured school building.

FROM PULA:

Follow signs to the motorway (which is a toll road) and head north towards Trieste (Trst), bypassing Rovinj and Porec.

Leave the motorway at Visnjan.

Follow signs to Motovun.

After you pass Motovun follow the road downhill towards Buzet, Livade and Oprtalj.

At the bottom of the hill cross the main road and go through Livade following the road uphill towards Oprtalj.

Drive into Oprtalj, past the Venetian Loggia - a russet-coloured open-sided building on the left - and down the hill. Take the next right turn.

Go up the hill (there's an old wall on the right of the small lane). At the top pass through the narrow gap (wide enough for a Land Rover) between the orange house on the right and the ruin on the left. The Palalzzo is on the left.
